First Day in School – Tips for Educators

The first day of school is an exciting time for both teachers and students. It’s a fresh start for everyone, but it can also be stressful to come up with the best first day in school ideas. Here is a list of ideas that will make your students’ first days memorable and fun. Read on to find out more!

Step One First Day in School: Welcome Your Students

Probably the most important step is to take some time to introduce yourself and any other support staff. Explain what you do at school, and answer any questions your students might have!

Try to create a welcoming environment so they feel safe and comfortable. Students may need an introduction to the space they’re going to spend every day at during these next few years of schooling. Take them around and show off all the different places in the building – it’ll take up any nervous energy they might have about being new kids!

Have you ever considered giving them a welcome gift? Kids are more excited about things when they’ve been given something special, which might be why we call welcoming gifts “swag.” Bring in items like stickers, pencils, erasers (maybe save your leftover supplies from the year before) – even little snacks will do the trick! Giving these out at the beginning of the year will help them feel more welcome in your classroom and show that you care.

Step Two First Day at School: Getting to Know Each Other

Have each student introduce themselves to the class at some point during the first day by giving a little introduction about who they are and what their interests are. This can be done through videos, questionnaires, or something else! Whatever your students are comfortable with.

Talk with your students to get an idea of what’s going on in their lives outside of school too. Ask questions such as “what do you like?” or “why do you like that?” Talk about anything – from the last book they read to their favorite TV show. Try a THIS or THAT activity to get to know them.

The This or That Game - Getting to Know You Edition gets their brains working while helping you learn more about each student in your class.

Students are more likely to voice their opinion if given the chance so listen carefully when they speak up about something or mention what interests them most. These early years can shape who we become later on in life so let’s give them all an equal opportunity from day one onwards!

Step Three First Day in School: Set Expectations and Goals

Have your class make some rules and goals together on how they want the classroom environment to play out during the first few weeks. These first few days can be hard for teachers too so we want everyone to get along and follow instructions from the start. By letting the students help to establish “rules”, it will help with classroom management and make them feel like they have some say over their environment too!

Have them share their thoughts on every rule before deciding whether or not it should stay in place – this way, everyone has an equal say in what happens and can voice their opinion without being judged. It also gives some students who might have been too shy to speak up chances to do just that.

Review what they create and discuss how important it is for them all to work together to have a peaceful classroom environment so students are ready to work.

Follow up with the classroom rules when it comes to everyday behavior. For example, role play certain situations before they happen. One example would be to make sure to ask students what they should do if someone says something that hurts their feelings. Teach them how to respond in a polite manner and then take the time for another discussion about everyday behavior – this way, you can teach kids how to handle themselves before anything happens!

Step Four – Focus on the Positive for the First Day in School

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the challenges of first day in school, but it’s important that we stay positive and focused on what can be accomplished. When starting a new job or activity, there are always going to be obstacles – don’t let them scare you!

There might be some challenges during these first few days of school but try to stay in a positive mood as much as possible! It’ll help keep everyone involved and make it easier for the students to get along when they realize that you’re working hard too.

If you stay positive during this time, then your students will hopefully follow suit and work hard as well instead of giving up when they feel like everything is against them. It’ll also help curb any negativity if people see how excited you are for the future even though it might seem daunting right now.

Combine positive affirmations for kids and proprioceptive input with The Positive Path.  Children can jump along the path or do wall push-ups while they read words of encouragement.

Step Five: Make Learning Fun!

For the first day in school try to make learning fun! It’s not always about staying serious all the time – make sure they’re having fun while learning new skills too to help foster engaged students.

Step Six: Don’t Give Up

It might seem easy to give up before anything has even started because this is all new territory but don’t let anyone discourage you – whatever happened before doesn’t matter now as long as we make sure everything’s ok moving forward. That also includes making mistakes along the way too – teach them that mistakes are opportunities to learn from as long as we practice saying sorry afterwards.

If you think something is going wrong, ask for feedback from your students and colleagues to see what they’re experiencing as well. This way, everyone will have a voice in the classroom and know that their opinions are valid no matter how inexperienced they might be!

As teachers, there are bound to be times where mistakes happen and those moments could have been avoided if something was changed earlier on down through our actions or words so take responsibility for your own mistakes first before blaming anything else for wrongdoings. That also includes taking responsibility for the mistakes of others too so don’t take their blame on your own shoulders.

Keep Calm And Carry On! As much pressure there is on teachers right now, don’t let that get in the way of enjoying yourself too – this is your chance to enjoy teaching kids some new skills so take advantage before anything else takes over.- Ask Yourself What Your Passion Is: Find out what your passion is and use that as a way to help you through the tougher days at school. Remember, it’s not always about teaching kids new skills because they can learn from us too – we all have something different to teach them so be sure to ask yourself what your passions are before anything else takes over!
