What is an Acrostic Poem?

An acrostic poem is a type of poetry where each line or stanza begins with a word based on the letters of another word.  The word based on the letter of another word is usually the first letter of each line but can be used in any fashion. The acrostic poem was traditionally done with the name of a person, place or thing as the main word.

How Do You Write an Acrostic Poem?

When writing an acrostic poem it is best to first look at the word for which you are writing. For an acrostic poem you will need to look for words that contain the letters of the word.  When writing lines of poetry think of what fits with your topic. You can add rhyming if you choose.

Forming an acrostic poem is much like writing a limerick or any other form of poetry where you are to write in order about the topic at hand. Each stanza must contain the letters of the word in some way, so it may be beneficial to let each sentence line up with these letters in your head as you write.
