Back by popular demand: DeCoding Jokes Book 2! Start your Occupational Therapy, or Physical Therapy session with a laugh! created by Thia Triggs OTR, this is a great individual or small group activity that can be done in person or virtually. Engage and motivate your students to practice handwriting. Build your therapeutic relationship through humor, laughter, and connection. The digital download will be available immediately following payment.
How it works:
A large sized Alphabet Code is provided that you can place on the student’s desk for close-point reference or choose a distant spot for far-point visual perceptual skill practice. Your student is provided with 3-lined worksheets with symbols for each letter of the words in their joke. They search the alphabetical Alphabet Code to find each symbol, writing their joke, one letter at a time. See preview.
LEVELED
Level A
*Alphabet Code: Many of the letter codes have a phonetic connection. For example, A is an apple, B is a boy, C is a cat.
*Worksheets: Two sizes of three-lined paper is provided, that typically are used by Kindergarten and First grade students.
* Jokes: Simple concrete, easy to understand jokes are used. One might expect them to be understood by ages 5 and above. For example, “What has two legs but can’t walk? A pair of pants!”
Level B
*Alphabet Code: The letter codes are random and the images are abstract rather than identifiable objects. For example, A is a stylized closed rectangle, B is a stylized reversed question mark, C is a stylized four-petal flower.
*Worksheets: Two sizes of lined paper are provided. You can choose to use a standard 3-line paper that typically is used by First grade students, or you can choose a Print Path developed disappearing middle line paper designed to facilitate independent use of correctly sized letters in preparation for using notebook paper.
* Jokes: Easy to understand jokes some of which include more abstract concepts are used. One might expect them to typically be understood by ages 7 and above. For example, “What did the traffic light say to the car? Don’t look. I’m about to change!”
Alternatively:
* If you are working with two students or a small group, give one child the joke sheet and the second child the symbol sheet. The children with the joke sheet verbally describe the symbol, and the children with the alphabet code can tell them the letter.
* If wanting to incorporate movement or prolong visual memory you can have your student use a chosen locomotor pattern to move from their worksheet to the Alphabet Code page to find their next letter.
Therapeutic Objectives:
* Executive function and problem-solving skills.
* Visual perceptual skills including visual discrimination and visual memory.
* Gaze shift, visual saccades – needed for reading, copying from the board, and getting information from the environment.
* Attention and focus.
* Pragmatic language skills.
* Auditory skills of listening and memory.
* Handwriting skills: includes Print Path’s disappearing middle line paper designed to facilitate independent use of correctly sized letters in preparation for using notebook paper.
* Group: cooperation, communication, and visual perceptual skills.
* Movement: target specific locomotor skills to move from worksheet to Alphabet Code.
